PLAT ASIA was commissioned to transform the Vision Square in Kangbashi District, Ordos, into a smart sports park catering to all ages, aiming to meet the growing public demand for spaces promoting healthy lifestyles.
PLAT ASIA

The original square, surrounded by residential areas, offices, schools, and exhibition centers, benefited from convenient transportation but, despite the presence of the central sculpture "Vision" and some basic facilities and small croquet courts, suffered from an unreasonable landscape layout, inefficient pathways, and a lack of supporting activity spaces, leading to declining vitality and low utilization, thus urgently requiring renovation and upgrade.

19.7-8.7x106: Rediscovering the Texture of the Topography
The unique coexistence of desert, grassland, and river landscapes across Ordos's 87,000 square kilometers served as the conceptual starting point for lead designer Bian Baoyang: to translate the region's distinct natural topography into the park's spatial experience, creating a truly local landscape. The Kubuqi Desert and Mu Us Sandy Land exhibit characteristic block dunes with gentle northwest slopes and steep southeast slopes due to the prevailing northwesterly winds; the park's site treatment follows this trend, applying micro-topographical landscaping oriented northwest-southeast based on existing terrain. The desert grasslands of Ordos chronicle millions of years of geological change, which the design weaves into the park's base layer through expansive lawns. The winding Red Willow River flows north to south through Wushen Banner, and the Yellow River crosses Dalate Banner from west to east; serving as the long river of human civilization, it forms the main arteries of the park’s circulation system, creating dynamic curves and rushing currents that carve out island-like rest nodes, synchronizing movement rhythms and fostering chance encounters.

An All-Ages Comprehensive Sports Park
The concept derived from the local landscape generated the park's spatial layout and circulation loop. The design first organized the entire site by establishing a loop-shaped "river" running track; the blue color scheme of the path echoes the blue sky of the Ordos Plateau and the sky reflected in the water. The renovation maintained the two original main sculptural features along the north-south axis and enhanced the central axis's S-shaped track. Functional zones were divided based on user age groups and sporting habits: utilizing the sparse vegetation characteristics of the northwest sector to create a new comprehensive sports zone, including spaces for 5-a-side/7-a-side football, basketball, tennis, badminton, and table tennis for diverse competitions and daily training. The Children's Wonderland is located in the park center; a bicycle racing track is designated for youths; an outdoor fitness equipment area serves the elderly. The elevated original croquet court and the newly added indoor croquet hall meet indoor competition standards and are highly favored by seniors. Leveraging the characteristic of the site's alkaline soil being difficult for plants to grow, this area was transformed into a dual-purpose seasonal space: a sandpit activity zone in summer and an ice rink in winter when filled with water. Additionally, a shallow water play pool and a dancing fountain pool were added to enrich the interactive hydrophilic landscape.

Children's Playground: Embracing Nature with a High Vantage Point
A core landscape feature was added to the park's center, integrating the Children's Wonderland and the park management service center into a panoramic viewing platform, the highest point of the entire park. The building, with its curved lines, forms a centripetal and safely enclosed children's play square. The location offers an open view and accessible circulation, facilitating adult supervision and quick access to all activity areas. A ramped roof spirals upwards, guiding pedestrians to the park's highest point, offering an overview of the entire park and the city's panorama. Children's play equipment is embedded into the building's facade, while the management service center occupies the ground floor, housing functions such as offices, a sports supermarket, retail space, and restrooms. Semi-open corridors and vertical louver facades enhance the building's transparency and interactivity with visitors.

"Sand Ridges" under the Sun: A Multi-Threshold Landscape
The overall landscape of the park maintains the sparse woodland and grassland appearance characteristic of Ordos, creating intimate under-canopy grassland activity spaces suitable for leisurely activities like camping and outdoor cinema. During the renovation, the designers preserved the well-established tall trees on the site and removed overly dense, vision-obstructing shrubs, clearing views to satisfy the psychological need for environmental security. Appropriate local vegetation was added, forming a distinctive local plant system alongside existing trees like *Populus alba*, Scots Pine, and *Salix cheilensis*. The design standardized the park's shading system. In addition to natural canopy shade from trees, membrane structure pavilions are set up along pathways and tree-lined roads to meet the usage needs of various groups, such as spectators at ball games, those resting along paths, or caregivers watching children. The variously shaped shading pavilions along the spaces use curved ridge lines to symbolize sand dunes, and their curved membrane roofs help block sunlight at different times, creating comfortable resting areas.

Habitat Experience of Intelligence and Health
The park operates using a smart management and service platform, interacting with users through intelligent facilities. Smart landscape facilities include intelligent lighting control, smart tracks that monitor flow rates, smart navigation integrated with site signage, smart drinking water systems, and solar charging facilities—a future-oriented intelligent system that sustainably and humanely serves citizens' sporting lives. The health of the ecological environment focuses on site water treatment and the utilization of local materials. Following the existing topography, a diversion and infiltration system is set up using changes in ground elevation, accumulating water in depressions to form scenic features and maintaining the balance of the park's water environment.
