From the architect. The Wild Mile project will create a new environment along the Chicago River that integrates habitat, education, and recreation. This 688-acre (1.7-hectare) water-based ecological park advances the vision of community-led urban ecological renewal. The project also contributes to enhancing community connectivity, providing cleaner water resources, and supporting a more vibrant ecosystem.

The project occupies the eastern side of Goose Island, situated between the North Branch Canal and the Turning Basin. Since the development of the Chicago Central Area Plan in 2003, this area has been envisioned as an ecological park. In 2017, the Chicago non-profit Urban Rivers collaborated with SOM to create a 140-square-meter (1,500-square-foot) floating garden as the first step toward realizing the Wild Mile vision. Since then, the project has evolved into a collaboration with the City of Chicago, the national strategic planning consultancy O-H Community Partners, the community center Near North Unity Program, the landscape firm Omni Ecosystems, the consulting and engineering firm Tetra Tech, the civil engineering company d'Escoto, and local community members, who provide core input on its goals, purposes, and priorities.

Wild Mile takes advantage of its geographical proximity to over 40 schools and academic institutions by integrating rich planning for educational and community programming. This includes a technique-driven initiative led by "River Rangers" volunteers, planning to recruit "citizen scientists" to document and provide regular reports on the reintroduced flora and fauna.

Upon completion, the Wild Mile will transform the former industrialized, man-made waterway along the east side of Goose Island into an ecological park serving people, wildlife, and the environment. The project restores and enhances the river for community benefit and public good through a series of floating gardens, a riverside forest with public walkways, kayak docks, and other amenities.
Wild Mile
