The Red Windmill is an experimental wooden house under the "Arch-Exist Wiki Secrets" series, located in a metasequoia forest in Wuhan that serves as a habitat for migratory birds. Dancer Ms. W commissioned the construction of her own weekend retreat here. This project is also part of the "Wiki Architecture Academy" natural co-construction program, representing another attempt to explore the diversity of living spaces.

1. Wilderness Dwelling in the Forest
The site is a vibrant metasequoia forest, a habitat for many migratory birds. We envisioned the wooden house evolving from a red migratory bird. As always, Arch-Exist maintains ultimate respect for nature. The location of the treehouse was determined based on the positions of the trees, using a fully elevated prefabricated wooden structure. No ground hardening or artificial landscaping was done to maximize the preservation of the original ecological scene of the metasequoia forest. The enclosed courtyard space carves out a private yard within the woods, achieving a state where there is a house in the forest and a forest within the house, creating a relaxed and pleasant vacation atmosphere.

2. Dancer in the Forest
If you wish, you can live comfortably anywhere you like. Exploring countless possibilities for a wilderness home has always been Arch-Exist's desire; the fantasies of friends have brought us much inspiration, allowing every friend returning to nature to find their own story. There is also a dancer in the forest who doesn't mind painting the house red, a pure, thorough red. The red space is like a theater in the forest, with the metasequoia and palm trees as dancers on the stage, moving with the wind. The dancer said that a wilderness home might as well be purely and passionately vibrant once; enjoying being seen from afar, while also savoring the tranquility after ecstasy, known only to oneself.

The entire structure adopts a glued laminated timber structure. Through digital technology, every irregular component and node was custom-designed, achieving 100% prefabricated construction. The owner's identity as an artist led us to ultimately interpret this house as a pure exhibit in nature, a red container assembled from wood. Regarding dwelling, there should be no standard answer; everyone hopes their residence can convey their understanding of life. Perhaps in the eyes of the artist, the wilderness home is also part of her artistic concept: a red stage in the forest.

The Red Windmill fulfills the owner's desire for seclusion. The journey to reach it is particularly mysterious and arduous. The pure red wooden house envelops you, yet makes you feel momentarily disoriented about your whereabouts. Here, there is only the sound of the wind, birds, and insects. At night, you can chop wood and start a fire yourself; there is a warm fireplace in the room. You can walk barefoot between the indoor and outdoor spaces and won't want to leave, as leaving here is another long trek back to the hustle and bustle.

3. Arch-Exist - Small House, Big Dream
Arch-Exist has always been dedicated to returning to natural living through natural construction. The "Red Windmill" continues this experiment in wild natural dwelling, breaking away from the inertia of thinking about size, and focusing attention on the relationship between living behavior and the environment. The answer to space is certainly far removed from daily living experience, perhaps even somewhat idiosyncratic. Being "small" brings one closer to the materials, making us more sensitive. Since we are already in the forest, why not stay barefoot for a day and listen to the sound of dry leaves crunching on the terrace?

4. Natural Construction
The entire structure adopts a glued laminated timber structure. Through digital technology, every irregular component and node was custom-designed, achieving 100% prefabricated construction. Regarding dwelling, there should be no standard answer; everyone hopes their residence can convey their understanding of life. Arch-Exist continues its philosophy of natural construction: we preserved every tree and bamboo on the site, continuing the original texture of the woodland and paths. The house is completely elevated above the ground, and all construction utilizes independently developed prefabricated wooden structures, built together by the team and the user.

A natural building can be constructed like LEGOs. The small house is placed in the forest like building blocks. We adhere to original and wild timber framing techniques, personally charring the exterior wooden panels. The connection methods for the wooden house all use small metal components that can be repeatedly assembled. We attempt to manage the precise relationship between the house and the environment in nature; every wooden house has an elevated structure, does not touch the ground, and has no surrounding walls or artificial landscaping—nature is the best enclosure.
