The Anren Tourist Center is an expansion and renovation project of the Liao Wei Mansion, located on the edge of Anren Ancient Town in the southwest of Chengdu. The Liao Wei Mansion was originally a private residence, later used as a winery, farmers' houses, and then fell into disrepair. It was listed as a historical building and cultural heritage protection unit in Chengdu in 2018, and has now been transformed into a tourist center and community activity center. As the historical gene of the old town, the project serves as the starting point for the newly built blocks, forming a new cluster of "Linpan" spaces and becoming a research sample for new town development in China.

The project site is situated on the outer edge of the ancient town, about 1-2 kilometers from the central plaza area, bordering the main road to the north and facing the bus station across the road, occupying the location of the ancient town's outer living room. To the north of the site is a relatively dense area of self-built residential houses by villagers; to the west are large-scale middle schools and universities; and to the east, south, and within the plot itself are vast expanses of farmland. The existing Liao Wei Mansion within the plot, together with the surrounding trees and shrubs, forms a small "Linpan" (a traditional rural settlement cluster protected by trees and water).

As a typical mansion architecture in Anren, the Liao Wei Mansion was originally a three-courtyard residence, with high walls and large courtyards dotted with trees and a water tower. Due to its distance from the core area of the ancient town and lack of maintenance, the courtyard walls had collapsed, the gate structure was damaged, and some roof trusses were on the verge of collapse before the renovation. The design adopted a rescue-oriented deconstruction and major repair to protect the cultural relics. The expansion part used steel structures and lightweight construction. Although adjacent to the old walls and residence, it maximized the protection of existing building components during implementation and after completion.

Based on the original layout that gradually expanded and elevated from northwest to southeast, the design added a low, shallow courtyard to the west and a high, wide courtyard to the east on the existing mansion complex. This expanded the three-courtyard residence into a five-courtyard structure, continuing and reinforcing the spatial characteristics and architectural personality of the pitched-roof building complex, creating an integrated whole where old and new blend.

The first courtyard of the old residence displays the results of the repair and renewal of various Anren mansions, including the Liao Wei Mansion. The space itself is a rich outcome of the ancient town's cultural relics, allowing visitors to have an initial experience of the town's culture. Newly constructed lightweight timber structures connect with the old buildings, providing indoor and outdoor rest spaces.

The second and third courtyards are smaller in scale with damaged walls. The design did not restore the original layout of the residence but instead preserved the framework to shape covered corridors (gray spaces) connecting the courtyards, forming multi-functional community activity areas.

The western expansion volume leans against the old wall, extending with a gently sloping single-pitch roof towards the community square, facing the secondary entrance of the "Linpan" town, forming an interface with a friendly scale.

In the eastern expansion section, the pitched roof starts from the side of the old building, gradually rising around the courtyard in a hip-and-gable style (Xieshan style). The square volume is obliquely cut by the site boundary: the main entrance presents a giant single-pitch roof form, creating a towering gable facade on the street and plaza sides, while the side adjacent to the old building maintains a modest, low scale to preserve an appropriate sense of distance. The final result is a multifaceted volume that combines the traditional pitched roof form with contemporary abstraction.

The space under the pitched roof organizes diverse functional areas, both high and enclosed. Visitors ascend the steps, and along the circulation path—which alternates between close proximity and distance from the pitched roof—reach the observation pavilion at the highest point. From here, they overlook the layered roofs of the Liao Wei Mansion to the west and the continuous expanse of the "Linpan" town, visually connecting the new and old buildings with the cultural context of the ancient town.
