The Tel Aviv-Yafo Music Center is a redesigned Jewish-Arab cultural center, intended to promote coexistence through music education. Situated at the heart of Groningen Garden, it serves the diverse youth population of the southern Tel Aviv-Yafo neighborhoods. This “garden building,” constructed in stages within a grove of eucalyptus trees, comprises the Old Wing (1965) and the New Wing (1992). The Old Wing, a modernist structure, houses administrative offices, rehearsal rooms, and classrooms; the New Wing contains the foyer, a 385-seat concert hall, and backstage facilities. Originally named the "House of the Orchestra," the building employed a design methodology combining shells and volumes, where each space was defined as an independent acoustic body. Although not listed for municipal preservation, this renovation aimed to reveal its historical layers and original geometric structure.

The architectural challenge lay in adapting to contemporary project needs while preserving acoustic quality, resolving technical and safety issues such as air conditioning and fire safety, stripping away excess layers added over the years, and renewing the original finishing materials with minimal additional cladding. As a first phase, a sensitive deconstruction of the building was carried out: the silicate walls, both inside and out, were restored; decorative elements, temporary exhibition spaces, and suspended ceilings were removed; concrete ceilings and beams were exposed; redundant rooms were demolished; and the enclosed upper stands were reopened.

The new design language adopted a low-budget approach, utilizing a palette of sustainable and cost-effective finishing materials, combining veneered elements, wood wool panels, aluminum baffles, linoleum, and rubber flooring. Through a clever combination of materials and colors, each space achieves a distinct personality.

Despite the distinct architectural character of the building's two parts, the new design creates a sequence of harmoniously connected spaces. The classrooms feature sloping ceilings that echo the trapezoidal layout, enhancing acoustics, while custom benches double as storage cabinets. The foyer is conceived as a wooden container, the main hall as a "black box," and the rehearsal halls are illuminated by daylight.

The main hall foyer faces the park and functions as a separate entrance during events, offering an open space for gatherings. Its curved wall is clad with aluminum tubes, creating an appearance reminiscent of musical instruments, echoing the linear aluminum baffle ceilings in the classroom corridors.

The Tel Aviv-Yafo Music Center is an integrative facility serving vulnerable populations in Jaffa and youth from across Tel Aviv. Its design appeals to varied audiences and accommodates activities such as orchestra, dance troupes, theater performances, and organizations renting space for conferences, which provide vital income for maintenance and project funding. Consequently, the space design supports dual uses, such as rehearsal sessions and pre-school activities, ensuring efficient utilization throughout the week. This flexibility extends operating hours into the evening and ensures a continuous impact on the community.
