Troldhedestien
Troldhedestien

Troldhedestien:
Troldhedestien: From railway to recreation
Troldhedestien, a picturesque nature trail stretching from the city of Kolding to the historic Dybvadbro Station, is a journey through both time and the diverse landscapes of Denmark. This trail, once a bustling railway line connecting Kolding with Troldhede in West Jutland, has been thoughtfully transformed into a recreational pathway that honors its industrial heritage while embracing the beauty of nature.
The railway was operational from 1917 until 1968, when the last train made its final journey along the line. In 2017, a visionary project was initiated to breathe new life into the disused railway by converting it into a nature trail. The primary goal was to create an inclusive space that invites people of all abilities to experience and connect with nature. The trail winds through a protected area, known for its varied nature and stunning natural beauty.

Our design integrates recreational facilities in a way that enhances, rather than disrupts, the surrounding environment. The result is a series of installations that blend seamlessly with the landscape, providing both functional and aesthetic value.

The facilities along Troldhedestien include shelters of various sizes, accessible restrooms, seating areas, water stations, bike racks, fire pits, and cooking facilities. Informative signage with maps and details about the area enriches the visitor experience, offering insights into the local environment and the trail’s history. These amenities are designed to support a complete nature experience, making the trail inviting for day-trippers and overnight visitors alike.

Three key points along the trail were identified through extensive analysis, workshops, and consultations with residents and stakeholders. These locations, where old stations or stops once stood, have been revitalized to serve as hubs for exploration and relaxation. Each spot reflects the unique characteristics of its surrounding environment, with facilities that cater to the specific natural features of the area.
One of the standout aspects of the project is the construction of new “station buildings” at these key points. The buildings provide restrooms, air pumps, water stations, and even charging points for electric bikes and wheelchairs. These facilities ensure that Troldhedestien is not only beautiful but also practical and accessible for all visitors.

The architectural concept driving the project was to create a pathway that immerses users in the natural world while ensuring minimal environmental impact. The trail itself is designed to follow the natural contours of the land, moving through different ecological zones. Along the way, a series of shelters offer places to rest or stay overnight, each designed to harmonize with its specific setting—whether in open fields, within trees, or near wetlands. Built predominantly from wood and elevated on stilts where necessary, these structures are as environmentally sensitive as they are welcoming.
Troldhedestien is a testament to how thoughtful design and careful planning can transform a forgotten piece of infrastructure into a vibrant public space. It is a place where history, nature, and modern accessibility converge, offering a unique and inclusive outdoor experience for all.
